Three categories of liquid products with growing demand in the Romanian and European markets — all handled at the GPO terminal.
The GPO terminal is dedicated to operating three categories of imported liquid products, all with growing demand: liquid bitumen for road infrastructure and waterproofing, biodiesel for meeting EU environmental targets, and liquid fertilizers for modern agriculture.
Product 01
Liquid bitumen
Bitumen is used in the production of asphalt mixtures and bituminous materials for waterproofing. Production in Europe has high costs (high energy and gas consumption), so the product is imported in significant quantities.
- Domestic road bitumen consumption (2023): approx. 900,000 t/year, increasing until 2033
- The only domestic production: Brazi Refinery, ~130,000 t/year — the rest is imported
- Import 2022: approx. 235 million USD, from Hungary, Greece, Turkey
Product 02
Biodiesel
The demand for biodiesel is linked to the consumption of Euro 5 diesel and European targets for reducing fossil fuels. Biodiesel is exempt from excise duties, which makes it more attractive in terms of price.
- Domestic Euro 5 diesel consumption (2023): ~5.2 million tons (of which ~4 million imported)
- Mandatory biodiesel component in Euro 5: 6.5%, increasing
- Romania imports ~45% of its needs — Poland, Bulgaria, Austria
Product 03
Liquid fertilizers
The European strategy aims to increase the use of liquid fertilizers at the expense of solid ones, due to faster absorption and reduced soil losses.
- Agricultural area in Romania: ~13.5 million ha (~8.2 million ha arable)
- Estimated consumption: 0.5–0.7 t/ha/year on irrigated land (direct injectables)
- Main imports: Bulgaria, Turkey, Egypt, Georgia
